Rams | Trumaine Johnson staying put
Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson, who was subject of trade talks, will remain with the Rams in 2017.
Saints | Malcolm Butler may not land with Saints
New England Patriots restricted free-agent CB Malcolm Butler appears unlikely to be traded to the New Orleans Saints, who are leaning towards keeping their draft picks on top of having to sign Butler to a long-term deal.
49ers | Mitchell Trubisky an option at No. 2
North Carolina QB Mitchell Trubisky is a strong consideration for the San Francisco 49ers at No. 2 overall in the 2017 NFL draft.
Redskins | WAS looking to add another RB
The Washington Redskins are looking to add another running back via the draft or free agency to complement RBs Chris Thompson and Rob Kelley.
NFL | Evan Engram more like a receiver
Mississippi TE Evan Engram is viewed by personnel executives as more of a big wide receiver than a tight end. Engram has 'outstanding receiving potential' but will never be a 'point-of-attack guy,' according to one NFC executive.
Footballguys View: Engram does play like a super sized wide receiver, and that makes him a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses. Good ole "anonymous scout" usually gets pretty salty this time of year. Sounds like he's up to it again with Engram...one of the more exciting TEs in this draft class.
NFL | Jake Butt has all-around game
Michigan TE Jake Butt was compared to retired TE Heath Miller by an AFC personnel man because of his 'all-around' game.
Footballguys View: That's an apt comparison, and his skill set is the reason why he could get drafted in the second or third round even though he's recovering from a knee injury suffered in Michigan's bowl game.
NFL | DeShone Kizer has most upside, most flaws
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer is a boom-or-bust prospect, according to an AFC scout. 'In terms of arm strength, athleticism, talent, intelligence, he's the highest-end guy,' the scout said. 'At the same time, he's also the one with the most flaws.'
Footballguys View: There's some Daunte Cullpepper to Kizer's game. He's mobile, has a big arm and can throw on the run. However, he slows his delivery quite a bit when setting up to throw and makes poor decisions during crunch time. Kizer has starter's upside, but he needs time to develop.
NFL | Myles Garrett the draft's best player?
Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett was ranked as the best prospect regardless of position in the 2017 NFL Draft by 11 of the 16 NFL personnel executives polled by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Footballguys View: The Browns aren't going to pass on a near-consensus no1 pick are they?
Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo staying put?
New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo 'isn't going anywhere,' according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys View: The Browns want Garoppolo, but they aren't willing to pay the price it would take to get him away from the Pats. They'll lose Garoppolo in free agency next year as he looks for a starting job...but they Patriots will get a compensatory pick for him they can use in 2019 if (when?) they lose the young passer.
Jaguars | No decision on Blake Bortles' option
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said the team has not decided if they will pick up QB Blake Bortles' option this offseason.
Footballguys View: The Jaguars may pass on the fifth-year option for Bortles...and they may draft a quarterback with a premium pick this year. Stay tuned.
Falcons | Coach fine with Dontari Poe's weight
Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn said he was comfortable with DT Dontari Poe's weight when he reported for offseason workouts this past week but did not disclose the weight.
NFL | Mike Williams looking to improve
Clemson WR Mike Williams said he is looking to get quicker in and out of his routes and has been working on quick movement and explosion drills.
Footballguys View: Williams is arguably the top WR in this draft class. He reminds some in the scouting community of former Steelers/Giants WR Plaxico Burress because of his size, wingspan and ability to win above the rim. Williams needs to work on his concentration and he'll suffer from focus drops, and he could learn better separation in the route tree. Even with the work he needs to do, Williams is a first-round pick.
Giants | Paul Perkins wants to be three-down back
New York Giants RB Paul Perkins said his goal is to become a three-down running back for the Giants.
Footballguys View: Perkins is a speedy change-of-pace back, but he's got the chance to be more. He's intent running inside even though that's not his forte. Perkins has the speed to make the corner, but he doesn't try to take every run outside. The Giants are looking at veteran thumpers like Adrian Peterson or LeGarrette Blount, and they could also try to find a big back in the 2017 NFL draft. Needless to say, Perkins is going to have competition for touches this season.
NFL | Corey Davis not fully healed
Western Michigan WR Corey Davis (ankle) is not fully recovered from his ankle injury but was able to work out with former NFL wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan Friday, April 21. Sullivan said he thought Davis looked very explosive during the workout and showed really good instincts.
Footballguys View: Davis has seen his draft stock get a little dinged as the draft draws near. He's still likely to go in the first round, and he's certainly a rookie WR fantasy owners need to monitor. Davis was dominant in college, and he's one of the most productive players -- regardless of position -- in this draft. His game is all about using route leverage to get open.
NFL | Obi Melifonwu met with three NFC teams
Connecticut S Obi Melifonwu recently met with the Carolina Panthers, Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to a source. He has also received steady interest from the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Redskins | Chris Thompson contract update
Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB Chris Thompson signed his one-year tender offer worth $2.746 million.
Bills | Jerry Hughes happy with new defense
Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes said he is happy that the team is moving to a 4-3 defensive alignment because it will allow the defensive players to play to their strengths.
Jets | Sheldon Richardson at workouts
New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson missed the first day of offseason workouts last week but participated in the rest of the week, according to a source.
Footballguys View: The Jets are trying to trade Richardson, but he's been on the block for some time with no takers. We'll see if they can get someone to bite during the 2017 NFL draft.
Jets | Jamal Adams destined for Gang Green?
LSU S Jamal Adams will likely be the New York Jets' selection with the sixth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft unless someone else is unexpectedly available, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.
Patriots | 'Long shot' Jimmy Garoppolo gets traded
New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be the target of several last-ditch trade attempts from the Cleveland Browns leading up to the start of the 2017 NFL Draft, but the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian considers a potential deal a 'long shot' that would require an 'overwhelming offer'.
Footballguys View: The Browns may want Garoppolo but they may not be willing to pay the price it would take to add him. The draft will be the final deadline for any deal to get done. The Patriots will lose Garoppolo next year in free agency as he'll move on to get a starting job.
